吴爱祥1963年1月出生于仙桃市张沟镇，从小学习刻苦，成绩优秀。他1979年从张沟高中毕业考入中南矿冶学院（1985年更名为中南工业大学）采矿工程专业学习，在中南工业大学完成硕士和博士学业后，先后在中南工业大学（2000年更名为中南大学）和北京科技大学工作。他曾任中南大学资源开发系教授、北京科技大学土木与环境工程学院院长、北京科技大学副校长等职，现任北京科技大学教授、博士生导师、校务委员会副主任。 “当选院士的喜讯传来时，吴爱祥院士正在老家探望父母。”张沟镇镇北村党支部书记操绪才介绍，吴爱祥小学、初中、高中的学习生涯一直张沟度过，他的家乡情结很重、孝心很浓，时刻不忘自己的根在张沟，春节、重阳、中秋等传统节日经常回到村里，陪父母吃饭、聊天。
